City Palace

The City Palace, one of the largest palaces in the world, can be approached through the Bari Pol or the Great Gate (1600) with the royal drums and then onto the Tripolia Gate (1725). The Tripolia is a triple gate made of marble arches. Between these two gates are eight carved toranas or archways under which the maharanas were weighed against gold and silver which was later distributed to the poor subjects. Popular entertainment like elephant fights took place in the court beyond the Tripolia Gate.

In size and outline the City Palace and its subsidiary palaces bear a resemblanceto theWindsor castle in England. The palace lies in front of the Rai Angan, a rectangular courtyard. The Rai Angan (1571) or the royal courtyard is arrived at through the Ganesh Deori Gate and encloses the shrine to Dhuni Mata. The Ganesh Deori was built in an enclosure around the stairway of Rai Angan. In its construction went in tiles imported from Japan, and they form a spectacular pattern depicting images of Lord Krishna and Ganesh.

Lake Palace

About Jag Niwas it has been said that "the low yet extensive island fringed with marble piazzas enclosing luxuriant orange-gardens interspersed with sombre cypresses; towering palms and gilded minarets shooting up here and there; the whole resting upon background of the dark and lofty Aravallis, forms a scene unsurpassed by any other in India." Ferguson has written about these two spots that "the only objects in Europe to be compared with them are the Baromean islands in the Lago Maggiore but I need scarcely say their Indian rivals lose nothing by comparison. They are as superior to them as Duomo at Milan is to Buckingham Palace. Indeed I know of nothing that will bear comparison with them anywhere."

Discovery Travel and Tours is an excellent Tour Operator in Udaipur which offers Holiday Packages Udaipur. By the latter half of the 19th century time and weather took their toll on the extraordinary water palaces of Udaipur. Pierre Loti, a French writer, described Jag Niwas as "slowly mouldering in the damp emanations of the lake." About the same time two colonial bicyclists, William Hunter Workman and his wife Fanny, were distressed by the ‘cheap and tasteless style’ of the interiors of the water palaces with "an assortment of infirm European furniture, wooden clocks, coloured glass ornaments, and children’s toys, all of which seems to the visitor quite out of place, where he would naturally expect a dignified display of Eastern splendour."

Sahelion Ki Bari

tour operator udaipur Rajasthan

Saheliyon ki Bari lies just beneath the Fateh Sagar Lake. Maharana Sangram Singh II designed this garden in the early 18th century purely as a pleasure garden and a summer palace for the 48 young maids that formed a part of the prince’s dowry. It is also said that the garden was presented as a peace offering from the Emperor of Delhi. Inside the garden is a reservoir surrounded by four black marbled cenotaphs in its four corners and one white marbled one in the centre. The terraces of these cenotaphs have water fountains shaped like birds from whose beaks water gushes out in thin sprays like the singing rain – producing a wonderful sight. The Maharanas entertained themselves around the four ornamental pools and the five fountains. These fountains were imported from England in 1889. Maharana Bhopal Singh specially was very fond of this place and built a rain fountain, so that it looked like rain dancing on the dancing maids.

Rajiv Gandhi ParkRajeev Gandhi Park is fast becoming a major tourist and local attraction because of its unique look and strategic location. Beautiful lakes and gardens are the hallmark of Udaipur. Be it quality or quantity, Udaipur is way ahead. It is far away something 7kms. The distinguished feature of gardens here is that most of them are made in locations where even the concept of a garden is inconceivable. Be it Nehru garden which is situated in the centre of Fateh sagar, Moti Magri which is developed on a hill, or the recently developed Rajeev Gandhi Park which also is on a hill, all have added value of being situated at a different location than a normal garden. The view of the park and the view from the park, both present an exotic scene. The design of garden is such that most part can be seen from distant place. Spacious Children Park is a wonderful thing here. Food court is also fully functional and its agreement has been signed for five year term. The grandiose look of the garden and its location make it a very important tourist spot. Foreign and local both visitors are showing great interest in the park.

Jag Mandir

Discovery Travel and Tours tour operator in udaipur rajasthan

Mandir lies towards the south of the lake and was completed by Maharana Jagat Singh I (reigned 1628-1652). However, the palace was developed by Rana Karan Singh (1620-28). This palace has quite a historical significance; it has a structure that had been built to give shelter to Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan) in 1626 when he was about to revolt against his father, emperor Jahangir. The Rana of Udaipur, Rana Karan Singh first gave him refuge in his City Palace. However, the Prince and his entourage were shifted to the island palace on lake Pichola when his nobles failed to respect Rajput customs. Most interestingly it was Khurram who had led the Mughal army in 1614 that had defeated Rana Amar Singh, the father of his host. Prince Karan was asked to act as an emissary to the Mughal court, and it was during this time that the Sisodias and the Mughals developed a friendship.

Rana Karan Singh treated his royal guest with much courtesy and built the Mughal Prince a domed pavilion upon the island. He crowned the pavilion by the Muslim crescent and lavishly decorated its interiors. The Rana had a throne built from a single block of serpentine for his revered guest and also a mosque built for the prayers of the Mughal Prince and his followers. It is believed that the pietra dura work on the interior of the palace later inspired Khurram for the detailing of the Taj Mahal.
